Bachelor Degree of Science in Maternal and Child Health/Lactation

The Major of Maternal and Child Health/ Lactation provides an evidence-based program for the lactation professional. Graduates of this program are qualified to professionally counsel expectant mothers and mothers of young infants about best practices for the care and feeding of their young infant, and also qualify to provide instruction for and/or make presentations to the medical profession (especially in a hospital setting), and community, governmental, and non-profit agencies. Additionally, completion of this degree program requires that one complete of clinical hours under the guidance of an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant, which I did in a hospital setting as well as attend five specified seminars provided by the Healthy Children Program. These seminars are approved by the American Council on Education for a recommendation of the award of college credit. I have successfully completed this program.

What does CLC mean?

A Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) has completed training that provides a solid, up-to-date, body of information regarding lactation as well the art of counseling. The training is based on the World Health Organization / UNICEF curriculum – an overview of what all health professionals who work with mothers and babies should know about breastfeeding. The designation Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), is awarded by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice to all learners who achieve a passing score on the test. Completion of the degree program requires that one complete five specified seminars provided by the Healthy Children program. These seminars have been approved by the American Council on Education for a recommendation of the award of college credit.

What exactly is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)?

With growing interest, a new medical profession has developed, the Lactation Consultant. A Lactation Consultant is a health care professional with years of study and expertise, in breastfeeding, who provides information and support to help you with your breastfeeding-related issues. Additionally, Lactation Consultants have to go through a rigorous curriculum. We have to demonstrate that we are competent in a wide variety of subjects related to breastfeeding, supporting both mom and her baby. We stay up to date on the latest and breastfeeding products. Lactation Consultants are a vital part of the healthcare system as experts and unique individuals playing a role in detecting and solving your breastfeeding problems. Together with your baby’s doctor and your own obstetrician/gynecologist or general practitioner, they ensure that you and your baby’s care as a breastfeeding couple is complete. Lactation Consultants who carry the credentials, IBCLC, behind their names are specially trained and qualified to assist with every aspect of breastfeeding. IBCLC’s are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners Inc under the direction of the United States Commission Certifying Agencies. The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant represents the “gold standard” in lactation consultant credentialing. Look for this credential when seeking the assistance of a lactation consultant in order to ensure the highest level of training, experience, and expertise. I passed my boards in July 2010. IBCLC works in a variety of settings including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practices.

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners was developed in 1985 to identify those who, ” the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes to provide quality breastfeeding assistance to babies and mothers.” Those who pass this exam are known as International Board Certified Lactation Consultants ( IBCLC).

All International Board Certified Lactation Consultants are also Registered Lactation Consultants (RLC).

Do Lactation Consultants charge for their services?

The answer to this question is most always, yes. Remember that lactation consultants are healthcare professionals who must maintain a certain level of training and expertise. This requires them to continually participate in continuing education experiences, purchase the most up-to-date professional texts, purchase malpractice insurance, and renew their certification at least every 5 years. Many lactation consultants are also self-employed or in private practice. While these types of Lactation Consultants many times are more readily available and able to practice without constraints that might limit their ability to practice freely, they also must self-support their practices.

Is it worth the money to hire a Lactation Consultant? This is a question that only you can answer. But consider a few things. The average cost of formula in the powdered form, the least expensive, can cost thousands of dollars for the first year. Of course, concentrated or ready-made formulas, as well as special hypoallergenic formulas required by some babies, are even more expensive. Research and anecdotal experience show that formula-fed babies are much more likely to be ill and require medical care more often than their breastfeeding counterparts. You can see the benefits of breastfeeding on my website. Mothers who formula-feed tend to miss work more often due to having ill children than mothers who breastfeed, resulting in lost pay at times. Most breastfeeding challenges can be resolved with one or two visits with a lactation consultant. At the rate of $80 to $200 per consult, your total investment in lactation consultant fees would come out to be less. Compare this to the cost of formula for a year, the potentially higher medical costs and possible lost days at work, and the lost benefits of breastfeeding for both you and your baby that no dollar amount can be placed upon! Many moms say that the simple peace of mind and self-confidence that a lactation consultant provides makes the consult well worth the money!

If the cost of hiring a lactation consultant is a concern for you, consider asking for a consult as a shower gift, or use the money from all those duplicate baby gifts you have to return and put it toward a visit with a Lactation Consultant.

My consultation with you provides guidance and practice for you to understand good positioning and techniques needed in order to be successful in breastfeeding. I make sure that I do not leave your home until all your questions are answered and you feel better about breastfeeding your baby. I am always one phone call away day or night. I care about each and of you. I love what do and I hope you will love breastfeeding your child.
